Solar power for around 197 households on the small island of ‘Uiha in the Ha’apai Group, was tested this week marking an important transition from diesel to solar power generation, ahead of commissioning at the end of the month. The island's two villages, which had only six hours of electricity a day, now enjoy 24 hours a day of 100% renewable power.

Telstra announced yesterday it had completed the acquisition of Digicel Pacific in partnership with the Australian Government. The acquisition which was initially announced in October 2021 was finalised, after necessary government and regulatory approvals. Digicel Pacific communications services across Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Nauru, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu will be overseen by a Telstra controlled board, chaired by Telstra Enterprise Group Executive, David Burns.

In Tonga, petrol, diesel and kerosene prices have reached their highest prices to date with new rates effective from Monday, 20 June for a month. Petrol is $4.28 per litre and diesel $4.35 per litre, while kerosene is $3.35 per litre. The surge in petroleum prices will increase the electricity tariff from 1July, on top of already increasing food prices.

The receipt of relief funds from the government’s development partners to support Tonga’s recovery from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption and tsunami has boosted Tonga’s foreign reserves. The official foreign reserves held by the National Reserve Bank of Tongavin April 2022, had increased considerably by $22.6 million to (from March) to $884.0 million, and by over $204 million since April last year.

Crucial generator parts are expected to arrive from Germany tomorrow, Saturday. Tonga Power Ltd. has been waiting for the parts needed to fix two electrical generators that went down, forcing some load shedding or rolling power cuts on Tongatapu at peak times since the beginning of May. After repairs, power generation should be back to normal in mid-June.

Tonga's domestic fibre optic telecommunications cable was torn apart by tremendous forces and deeply buried under volcanic debris on the ocean floor. It may take up to a year to fix. Tonga Cable Ltd. is looking worldwide for anyone with a 110km spare cable, but it may have to be specially manufactured and delivered from France. It was one of two cables broken during the Jan. 15 eruption.
