Tourism operators in Tonga's top destination, say Vava'u is once again being crippled by a lack of air services. The Tonga government-owned Lulutai Airlines withdrew the services of its main SAAB340 aircraft from 17 January 2023, and there's no indication of when a replacement might come into service for the Vava'u and Ha'apai groups.

School children in Tonga will receive a gift of pencils containing seeds that can be planted after the pencil is used-up. The 10,000 pencils made from recycled paper and containing tomatoes, chilli and mustard seeds, were donated to school children in Tonga by Queen Nanasipau’u on 20 January.

Tonga was elected as a member of the IRENA Council for 2023 -2024 during the 13th Assembly, in UAE last week, that brought together heads of state, government, ministers, and decision-makers in the energy sector from its Member States, as well as interested parties, under a theme “World Energy Transition - The Global Stocktake”. Tonga's Prime Minister was in UAE for the event.

There was no foul play involved in two deaths investigated by Tonga Police last year, in cases that involved a woman who died in a house fire in Vava’u and a man whose body was found in his car under the sea at Tu’imatamoana Wharf on Tongatapu. Meanwhile, another drowning death in Vaipua Harbour is being re-investigated by Tonga Police.
