A nine-year-old boy suffering from suspected appendicitis, and another woman patient, were evacuated from Ha‘apai yesterday, Sunday, by a French aircraft. Lemoto Latu of Fotuha‘a underwent emergency surgery soon after his arrival at Vaiola Hospital.

Under a joint operation by the armed forces of Tonga, New Zealand and France, tons of New Zealand gifted cyclone relief supplies have been ferried overnight to Pangai and also by three flights made by a French CASA aircraft to Lifuka today, in a major effort to supply drinking water, shelter and other goods to the areas that were devasted by Cyclone Ian on January 11.

Assisted by Chathams Pacific, Digicel-Tonga chartered six flights to Ha‘apai over the last three-days to get their crew and relief workers over as rapidly as possible.

NASA's TRMM satellite passed over Tropical Cyclone Ian three days in a row and captured rainfall and thunderstorm cloud height data about the deadly storm as it strengthened and weakened. Powerful thunderstorms in Ian's eye wall were found reaching heights of about 15 km/9.3 miles. TRMM's data was used to create a 3-D flyby animation of Ian's well defined eye on January 11, 2014 at 0833 UTC [9:30pm Tonga local time].

Food and water supplies worth more than $40,000 pa’anga was handed over to the Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano from the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga HE Mr Huang Huaguang to help the relief efforts in Ha'apai on January 15.
