Pacific Women are the unsung heroes of the region’s tourism industry says the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), as it recognises their contribution to tourism development to mark International Women’s Day today. At every level of the tourism industry, Pacific women are represented from grassroots handcraft producers, and hotel and resort employees, to tourism industry executives.

A Nauran national in Fiji, Julien Henrich (22), has been sentenced to three years in jail by a Fijian court for the death of a Tongan USP student, Sione Tufui (22), who was tragically killed after being attacked by a group of boys outside a nightclub in Suva in 2014. Antarctic Peninsula
A huge crack on the Antarctic Peninsula, across the Larsen C ice shelf, set to break free an enormous iceberg six times larger than Tonga’s combined landmass, is being monitored by scientists at Project MIDAS, an Antarctic research group. The crack is more than 100 miles in length and 1,500 feet across and the ice mass could break free within the next few months. The loss of the ice shelf, which acts as a barrier to the flow of land ice, can cause ice to move faster into the ocean contributing to a faster rise of global sea levels.
