Proponents of digital identification see the COVID-19 pandemic as a once-in-a-century opportunity, with a potential “jackpot market” of nearly eight billion people. In these dangerous times, using digital IDs to help control the spread of the virus and eventually to manage the distribution of a vaccine is often deemed appropriate and necessary. But there are ethical pitfalls. Rather than submitting people to a data-driven and AI-directed system that relies on surveillance and control through digital IDs, we should create more decentralized participatory frameworks. Collaborative approaches, based on the power of civil society, form the backbone of a strategy that uses our social talent to achieve humanity’s collective goals. By Dirk Helbing and Peter Seele.

Two repatriation flights are scheduled to arrive at Fua’amotu International Airport tomorrow, Wednesday, from Fiji and Kiribati confirmed Ministry of Health CEO, Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola. Tonga Police and military will cordon off the restricted areas from noon on September 2 until midnight on September 18.

Unclaimed money totalling over $973,085 pa'anga, held in 1582 customer accounts by commercial banks in Tonga, will be transferred to the government and will become government property, if the accounts remain unclaimed. The account holders have until November to make their claims, the National Reserve Bank Tonga announced on 28 August.

Mikaele Hoponoa Pahulu (40) was sentenced to three-years imprisonment for beating up a 71-year-old patient at the Psychiatric Ward in Vaiola Hospital. The victim, who suffered a severe head injury, remains paralysed and is fed via nasogastric tube.

Manase Tonga (42) received a suspended prison sentence on August 28 at the Supreme Court for possession of cannabis, and also a rifle and ammunition without a licence, in two separate incidents in 2018-19. The court was told the accused had begun selling drugs because his work fixing water pumps at the bottom of the village wells presented health and safety hazards, and caused impairments that made it difficult for him to maintain his family.
