A Nuku'alofa bar owner has lost an Appeal in the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court and failed to have charges that emanated from a police entry to be set aside. The licensee was appealing against the decision of a Magistrate who declared that Tonga Police had lawfully entered the Billfish Bar premises. In his judgment on 4 August, the Lord Chief Justice agreed with the Magistrate that the Police constables' entry to the bar was lawful under Section 70 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act.

New Zealand Universities are now accepting students who have completed the Tongan National Form Seven Certificate (TNFSC) programme. Tonga's Prime Minister's Office announced on 4 August, that the qualification has been accepted as "meeting the minimum requirements" for entrance to a New Zealand University.

A new dialysis centre under construction in Tonga, is expected to be completed in April next year, the Minister of Health, Hon Dr Saia Piukala, said today. There are about 50 patients in Tonga who urgently need the dialysis treatment and they will be the first to get treatments, when the dialysis centre opens, he told a media briefing at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Supreme Court of Tonga has ruled in favour of a civil claim brought by the Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs against the Public Service Commission, who unlawfully initiated serious disciplinary action against her. In his ruling the Lord Chief Justice Whitten KC. considered that there were many problems with the regulations - saying the wording in some regulations is "nonsensical". He also said the PSC was in breach of a requirement to appoint a CEO for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese Navy Hospital Ship, the Peace Ark docked at Vuna Wharf to a welcoming fanfare this morning, 28 July. Hon. Hu'akavameiliku urged the Tongan public to use the free services [starting from Monday] on the ship. The PMO said that the Ministry of Health is in close collaboration with the ship in organizing Chinese medical teams designated to village health centres, while a helicopter team is assigned to dispatch immediate medical cases in the outer islands. A medical team will also be visiting Primary and Secondary Schools for educational exchanges.

A new hospital for Vava'u and a new nursing school at Vaiola Hospital in Tongatapu, are two big health initiatives, planned by government under its new budget, the Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku said today. He expects financial aid from foreign donor partners will help to cover the government's $31 million budget deficit for the financial year.
