UNICEF is calling for urgent action to protect children from a host of risks and harms online around the world including the Pacific, as part of its Safer Internet Day message this week. Tonga is playing its part with cyber safety programmes being delivered in the kingdom in partnership with UNICEF, who reports that that one in three internet users worldwide is a child.

Samoa has committed to protecting children from all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse by ratifying two Optional Protocols of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) last week, UNICEF Pacific in Fiji reported.

The President of Fiji, HE Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and the Special Representative to the United Nations Secretary General on Violence against Children, Ms Marta Santos Pais, sent a strong and unified message at the start of a three-day conference on ending violence against children today, saying “Violence against children is not inevitable, it can be prevented.”
