Four Tongan law students who arrived in Tonga today are hoping that government will assist the remaining Tongan students to return. They are grateful to be back home after Tropical Cyclone Pam devastated Vanuatu five-days ago, “but we feel really bad that we had to abandon the rest of our Tongan students,” said Esther ‘Aholelei in tears at Fua'amotu airport.

Eight Tongan law students stranded in Vanuatu are appealing for assistance from the Government of Tonga since their living condition at the campus has worsened with no clean drinking water in the aftermath of Super Cyclone Pam.

The strongest tropical cyclone on record in the South Pacific, Tropical Cyclone Pam, a Category 5 super storm, hit Vanuatu last night causing deaths and destruction. This morning Pam had a central pressure as low as 899hPa and was gusting up to 335km per hour at its centre. It is one of four cyclones unusually affecting the South Pacific at the same time. A severe Tropical Cyclone Pam that was upgraded to Category 5 early this morning is expected to hit Vanuatu tonight, Friday March 13 and emergency plans have been activated.
