Tonga is considering a mandatory death sentence for offenders who traffic 5 kilograms or more of a Class A drug. An amendment bill tabled into Parliament yesterday also proposes the death sentence for offenders who repeatedly procure and use children in drug offences. The three foreign nationals who were arrested and charged in relation to a cocaine haul in Vava‘u, were today released on bail, at the Magistrate's Court in Neiafu. Robin and Brenda Cox, and Calvin Manuceau will be called to appear in court again on August 17.

The Tongan Parliament got off to a slow start yesterday, 10 August after its four weeks break. At first it did not have a quorum, so it went into recess for 10 minutes. In fact, the House was scheduled to resume on 2 August. However, it did not get rolling until yesterday morning. More COVID-19 vaccines, including Pfizer doses, will follow to inoculate youth and pregnant women. He said the risk of the Delta variant entering Tonga was increasing. If a Delta outbreak happens in Tonga it might be too late to vaccinate some people to protect them.
