In a speech taking just over a minute, Tonga's King Tupou VI sent his best wishes to members of parliament at this morning's opening of the first session of Tonga's Legislative Assembly following the General Election.

Tonga may have a new Prime Minister at the earliest by Christmas Eve, according to the Interim Speaker of the Tongan Parliament, Lord Tupou, who said that the first chance to call a meeting for the secret ballot would be 24 December.

Tongatapu voters have replaced seven of their ten incumbent MPs, retaining only three in today's General Election. One of the incumbents did not restand. No women were successful in taking Tongatapu seats.
