An announcement by government yesterday, 25 January, that it would create a 10 acres Va’epopua National Park in a former Nuku’alofa rubbish dump is yet another controversial decision that government has made during the past weeks - the park excludes the 500-600 year old Va’epopua Sia Heulupe archaeological site, the objective of a conservationist petition last year.

Lapaha, Tonga
Archaeologists who are working on a project to map Tonga's ancient terraced tombs this week began the first laser imaging and remote sensing work to be conducted in Tonga, and they aim produce a three dimensional graphic map of Lapaha as as it was during the reign of the Tu'i Tonga from the 13th century to 1885.

HM King Taufa‘ahau Tupou IV at 80: "The main thing is to have good manners, be smart, know what you are doing, then there is no reason why a person is not given the opportunity." The King recently introduced a new sport, hockey for girls, which he hopes will make them so tired that they will not have time to get into trouble.
