Tonga is expecting up to three tropical cyclones, including at least one severe tropical cyclone for the 2023-24 cyclone season, Tonga Meteorological Services warned today. Most tropical cyclones occur in Tonga between January and March.

A gale warning remains in force for Tongatapu and 'Eua land areas this evening, as Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa, now a weakening Cat. 1 system, is expected to lie at about 335km West of Nuku'alofa at 7:00pm today. Previous hurricane and storm warnings for Tonga have been downgraded by the Tonga Meteorological Service.

A Tropical Cyclone Alert remains in force for Tongatapu, Ha’apai and ‘Eua as severe TC Harold moves towards Tonga. On its current track, it is expected to lie at about 120km south-west of Nuku'alofa, at around 7:00am on Thursday morning, as a Category 3 storm.
