Two nominees for Prime Minister Designate, named as Siaosi ‘Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni and ‘Aisake Valu Eke, have addressed the newly elected Members of the Tonga Legislative Assembly this morning in an ongoing meeting, which started at 10:00am at Parliament House in Nuku'alofa. ‘Akilisi Pohiva (76) has been elected by members of parliament as Tonga’s Prime Minister, declared at about 6:30pm, at Parliament House. He narrowly defeated his challenger, former Deputy PM, Siaosi Sovaleni by 14 to 12 votes. The result arrives four months after King Tupou VI dissolved parliament on August 24.

Tonga's Members of Parliament are currently on a 15-minutes break before they cast their vote in a secret ballet to elect Tonga's Prime Minister from two nominations read out this morning at Parliament House. Caretaker Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva and his former Deputy PM Siaosi Sovaleni are vying for the top job.
