Palau’s reefs had the highest coral cover observed on the Global Reef Expedition—says the latest report from the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, undertaking the largest coral reef survey and mapping expedition in history. “Palau’s coral cover is truly exceptional,” said Alexandra Dempsey, the Director of Science Management at the Foundation.

Palau has signed a National Energy Act into law to completely reshape its energy sector. The Act will enable an Administration to be formed to better coordinate and manage energy to meet policy goals, especially through renewable sources.

The US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Daniel Russel, will travel to Apia, Samoa; Nuku'alofa, Tonga; and Koror, Palau, February 20-25, for bilateral meetings and regional consultations. Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Admiral Scott Swift will accompany Assistant Secretary Russel.

Pacific Leaders at a Special Retreat meeting in the Cook Islands on May 5 agreed to overhaul the Pacific Plan. Consultation meetings are currently being held throughout the region, to prepare a draft Framework for Pacific Regionalism, including a consultation meeting in Nuku'alofa last week.

The European Commission last week has announced that free-visa travel will soon be granted for nationals from 19 third-world countries, including ten Pacific Island countries.
