Ma’ake Pasina (36) was sentenced to two and a half-years imprisonment for causing serious bodily harm when he stabbed a complainant twice during brawl, in Ngele’ia in 2021. The Lord Chief Justice also rescinded a previous six-months' suspended sentence and added it to this one, meaning the offender will serve a total of three-years imprisonment.

Two men, aged in their 20s, were spared death penalties and, instead, sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, after bludgeoning to death the victim, Fanaafi Misifane (35), at Holonga in 2019. A third man was sentenced to eight-years for manslaughter. The death was a tragedy, said the judge. “Mr Misifane was killed on the ground where he lay. Sudden and savage he had no chance at all.”

The judge found that the defendant carefully calculated and planned his attack. The way he carried out the attack was chilling, they ambushed the victim. “This is not only brutal; it is a cowardly behaviour to attack an unarmed person,” he said at the sentencing.
