A new series of Tongan bank notes was launched today, 4 December, in commemoration of the official birthday of Tupou I - a national public holiday. HRH Prince Ata unveiled the new bank notes at a launch held by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga t the Fa’onelua Convention Centre in Nuku’alofa.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) has officially identified and taken action against the entity operating under the name "Famili Tonga USA Trading" for engaging without a licence in investment activities confirmed as a banking business. This entity has been found to operate without a requisite banking license, a contravention of section 7 of the Banking Act 2020. The Reserve Bank reiterates its warning to the public, urging caution against participating in unauthorized financial activities or investments.

The Tongan Pa’anga fell to its lowest exchange rate against the New Zealand Dollar since 2014, with one pa'anga buying less than .58 cents today, and possibly its lowest rate ever against the NZD.

Tonga’s official foreign reserve continued to grow as the National Reserve Bank of Tonga recorded an increase of $26.8 million for the month of June. The reserves rose to $468.7 million, equivalent to 8.1 months of imports.
