A second tugboat for Tonga, the MV Olovaha, was launched this morning by HM King Tupou VI and HM Queen Nanasipau’u at the domestic wharf terminal in Nuku‘alofa. Costing $2.1 million pa’anga, the vessel was financed by the Ports Authority Tonga, with a 55% loan from the Bank of the South Pacific and 45% from its own funds.

An inter-island passenger ferry the MV Princess Ashika is due to arrive in Tonga from Fiji on Friday, June 12 to replace the old MV Olovaha. The Managing Director of the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia Ltd., John Jonesse, said the vessel that was built in Japan, had been operating in Fiji for some years and is in good condition

I am writing to you in the hope that you can assist me with a piece of Tongan history. Between 1971 and 1982, the first M/v Olovaha sailed the Tongan Islands acting as a ferry and cargo ship. I actually served on this ship when she was in Australia under the name Queen of the Isles. - Andy Newland
