A 38 year old mother of seven, Sau’iluma Guttenbeil, was acquitted of murdering her husband after she ran over him with her four-wheel drive vehicle in Neiafu in 2012, but was found guilty of manslaughter at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa last week.

The trial of five accused policemen charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of New Zealand Police officer Kali Fungavaka began today, Tuesday, April 8 at the Supreme Court in Nuku’alofa. Kali died at Vaiola Hospital on August 23, 2012 after he was fatally injured while in police custody.

A suspended Police Constable Valeliano Manu (33) and two foreign nationals, Chinchiu Liu (aka Kevin Liu) (31), and ShiQing Lin (32) were jailed on January 21 for over five years for importing over 2 kilos of the controlled chemical pseudoephedrine. A fourth man was jailed for possession. The case involved the importation and possession of a cold remedy known as “contac NT”.
