The Tonga Invitational XIII team that defeated the British Lion last week, remains largely unchanged with only one replacement in the form of 'Ata Hingano who takes over Fanatesi Niu’s position in tonight's test match against Australia at Mount Eden Stadium, Auckland. Hingano returns as halfback after recovering from a shoulder injury that resulted in him sitting out last weekend’s test match against the British Lions.

The Cook Islands are the talk of the Rugby League 9s World Cup after they decimated Tonga’s Invitational team 30 – 7 in the first round of the competition last night 18 October in Sydney, Australia. In order for Tonga Invitational to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition, they will need to achieve two landslide victories over their remaining pool opponents Toa Samoa and Fiji Bati, and hope that the Cook Islands lose at least once.

The Tonga National Rugby League Board (TNRL) was suspended by the Rugby League International Federation Board (RLIF) in a decision made last night, 26 September. As a result, Australia’s NRL announced they would withdraw an invitation for a TNRL team to play in the World Cup 9s to be held in October.

Over 23,000 fans – mostly wearing red – turned up at Auckland’s Mount Smart Stadium on 22 June to watch the Kiwis vindicate their Rugby League World Cup loss against Mate Ma’a Tonga with a convincing 38 – 14 win. Despite the big loss, Mate Ma’a Tonga fans remained elated and steadfast throughout the game, cheering on their team with chants and hymns, even as the Kiwis closed the game with an unreachable lead in the final minutes. It will cost around $45,000 pa‘anga for the Tongan Parliament to send a delegation of six people, including the Speaker Lord Fakafanua, “to show Parliament’s unwavering support for Mate Ma’a Tonga” on Saturday.
