Solar power for around 197 households on the small island of ‘Uiha in the Ha’apai Group, was tested this week marking an important transition from diesel to solar power generation, ahead of commissioning at the end of the month. The island's two villages, which had only six hours of electricity a day, now enjoy 24 hours a day of 100% renewable power.

Ha’apai has 18 positive COVID-19 cases in the community, recorded on Saturday, April 2, the Minister for Health, Hon. Dr Saia Piukala said today. To date nationally, nine people have died due to COVID-19 and another seven from co-morbidities. Some active cases in Tonga remain “moderately severe”. The PMO expected the numbers to be announced by the Ministry of Health at a press conference this afternoon.

The COVID-19 virus has reached Ha’apai, with 29 positive cases confirmed out of the 126 people who travelled from Nuku’alofa to the outer islands, last week. Meanwhile, a total of 363 new cases were recorded in the whole of Tonga over a 24 hour period up to 6:00am today, bringing the total number of active cases in Tonga to 2,919. Positive cases in Tonga are forecast to peak at 1,000 cases per day by mid-April. Three people have died from COVID-19 and another six positive cases died from underlying illnesses.

A Ha'apai woman has died today after being rescued with 18 people, who were on board a small local ferry boat that capsized in heavy seas off Foa Island, on Wednesday afternoon. A rescuer said the woman had refused one of his four life jackets so it could be given to a child. There were no life jackets on the boat. Two people remain in hospital.
