But where do their old cars go and what harm can they cause? Global dumping of substandard, ‘dirty’ cars in developing countries is a huge problem, that threatens health, safety and the environment, contributing significantly to air pollution and hindering efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

As climate change negotiators meet in Bonn, Germany, between 8 – 18 May, to discuss rules and processes to implement the Paris Agreement, the Chair of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Group, Gebru Jember Endalew is concerned little is being done to support poor and small countries vulnerable to climate change. Underdeveloped Pacific Island nations such as Tonga also lack the capacity to adequately protect their population from natural disasters, increased drought and sea level rises.

Six Pacific Islands of the 15 overall countries submitted their ratification of the Paris Agreement during a special signing ceremony on 22 April in New York. Fiji, Nauru, Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa and Tuvalu submitted their ratifications.
