Tonga's King in Council has repealed the Emergency Powers Regulations 2007 and replaced them with new Emergency Powers (Public Safety and Public Order) Regulations 2008, effective from September 5 for 30 days, over an extended area of the capital Nuku'alofa.

The decision by Government and its Civil Servants on September 4 to end the Civil Servants' strike by giving in to the strikers demands, was a huge undertaking by a government that has few sources of revenue other than taxes, foreign aid and foreign remittances. Editor's Comment

A report by the BBC News about the Tongan strike, published on the BBC news website on 28 July, 14:07:09 GMT, wrongly attributed quotes to the Matangi Tonga web-site. The Matangi Tonga has not reported Finau Tutone, the President of the Public Service Association, as saying such things.

From the empowerment of the different levels of political dispensation, to the operation of the executive machinery, decisions and appointments by the Government has been carried out increasingly with a view towards inclusiveness, accountability, transparency and the rule of law.
