Tonga Police arrested a 33-year-old man from Tatakamotonga on Tuesday, 10 January 2023, for possession and supply of illicit drugs, after intercepting the suspect on a public road between Holonga and Pelehake.

Bruno Latu (27) was sentenced to 27-months imprisonment for offences that included possession of a pistol without a license and 1.72 grams of methamphetamine.

Vaipulu Ikamanu was discharged on charges relating to the importation of prohibited goods, a .22 rifle and 6,801 ammunitions alleged to have been smuggled in a box from the United States last year. He said, he was only asked to collect it. The judge said S.117 of the act was inconsistent with the Constitution “and I therefore find that S.117 is void.”
