The two nominees for Tonga's new Prime Minster Designate are Dr 'Aisake Valu Eke and  Dr Viliami Uasike Latu, both People's Representatives, the Lord Speaker announced this morning in a special meeting of the Tonga Legislative Assembly, where elected representives will take part in a secret ballot to elect the PM. Results were awaited at 3:00pm.

A proposal by Cabinet that would deprive the King in Council of certain powers of appointment has been strongly challenged by the Lord Privy Seal this evening, in a statement that says Cabinet is acting outside of the law in not renewing Police Commissioner Kelley's contract.

After being in force for over four years and two months the Tongan Emergency Powers Regulation enforced on the Nuku'alofa Central Business District area since 17 November 2006, and later on other Proclaimed Areas of the capital, was lifted last Wednesday, 2 February, the Minister of Police, Dr Viliami Latu announced today.
