The events of the past week, with the parliament deferring its deliberation on a motion for a vote of no confidence for a month, and then the death of a New Zealand policeman in the care of the Tonga Police, has highlighted the social, economic and political problems that are engulfing Tonga at the moment. The reign of His Majesty King George Tupou V, 2006-12, was the shortest of any of the monarchs of the Tupou Dynasty, since King Siaosi Tupou I ascended to the throne as the 19th Tu'i Kanokupolu in 1845. King George Tupou V, however, has been a mover and a shaker of Tonga's political, social and economic life, since he entered the civil service in 1970 as Crown Prince Tupouto'a at the age of 22 years. The Tonga government's current sense of urgency to introduce a Freedom of Information Policy and to activate an Anti-Corruption Commission, is a sign that it has come to terms with the need to take its reform program to another level, and to have a more transparent, and corruption-free administration. After a year-long search for a more democratic system, the new government is still trying to find its feet as the Constitutional and Political Reform continues to unfold itself.

Today, despite our political differences, our conducts are still somewhat controlled by our rich traditions of respect and considerations of others (ngaahi 'ulungaanga faka'apa'apa moe toka'i). Those traditions sometimes force us to put aside our personal feelings and recognize the importance of living in harmony. Are they all good? For heaven's sake, no. There is plenty of room for improvement. - Tevita Langi

Generations from now, Tongans will repeat those sentiments, over and over again, as they commemorate 10 November 2004, as the date when HM King Taufaha'au Tupou IV, gave his people the ultimate gift - a role in the selection of some of his Cabinet Ministers, and thus acknowledging that they have an integral role to play in the democratic governance of the Kingdom of Tonga.
