A 35-year-old man from Mataika was arrested after the seizure of methamphetamine and cannabis on March 31 by the Police Drug Enforcement Taskforce.

Nine people have been arrested with methamphetamine and cannabis at four different locations in Tongatapu, as Tonga Police continues operations to disrupt the supply of illicit drugs.

Taufa Latuselu was sentenced to nine-months imprisonment, which was fully suspended for unlawful possession of illicit drugs by the Lord Chief Justice who said, had he been charged with supplying or if this offending occurred after the current amendments to the Illicit Drugs Control Act, full suspension would not have been available.

Heamani Saafi (66) was sentenced to two-years and six-months imprisonment for cultivation of three cannabis plants at his home in Ha'asini. The illicit drug weighed 59.18 grams. Justice Langi suspended the sentence in full on February 4, at the Nuku’alofa Supreme Court.

Ue’ikaetau Tapa’atoutai was sentenced to six-months imprisonment for possession of 0.08 grams of methamphetamine and 0.43 grams of cannabis. This was fully suspended on conditions.

‘Alifeleti Poifi Katoa was sentenced to one-year nine-months imprisonment for possession of 0.34 grams of methamphetamine and 2.74 grams of cannabis, which was fully suspended at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.

Siaosi Kalohihea (28) and wife Louena (25) were sentenced to six-months imprisonment for possession of illicit drugs, which was fully suspended, by a Supreme Court judge who urged Tonga Police to catch the main supplier to stop the “scourge of drugs” in the community. “We need to get the person in Tonga who is receiving the drugs from overseas, to stop the spread of drugs,” he said.

Police arrested 230 people during ‘Operation Finau’ over the Christmas and New Year holidays from 21 December 2020 to 4 January 2021. The Police Drug Enforcement Taskforce also arrested 18 people and seized cannabis and methamphetamine from 16-30 December 2020.

Toomas Liiv from Estonia was sentenced by the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court to two-years imprisonment, which was fully suspended on charges, including possession of 67.12 grams of cannabis seized at Puke in 2019.
