Twenty-two houses are now standing at Masilamea (Atata Si’i) in the new settlement built for the displaced families of Atata. It’s been a year, two weeks and one day since the catastrophic tsunami destroyed their island village life on of January 15 2022. However, more than five houses are yet to have electricity and/or water supplies connected.

Table Tennis is providing a powerful distraction for the youth among the most affected by the volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, which devastated homes on the islands of Mango and ‘Atata. The trauma of their recent experiences will no doubt remain with the displaced communities for a long time to come – but, in the meantime, the smiles of joy on the children’s faces as they play table tennis brings happiness in these difficult times.

The impact of the tsunami and volcanic eruption on 'Atata and surrounding islands is most visible from the air. “The wave must have been huge,” said Royal Australian Navy Chaplain Simote Finau, who went ashore with around 30 Australians from the Operation Tonga Assist taskforce, after the locals had evacuated. New photos taken for damage surveys they conducted were released on Friday.

Around 95 children and youths, among the families evacuated from ‘Atata Island after the tsunamis destroyed their homes on Saturday Jan. 15, are currently staying at a Church Hall in Kolomotu'a, Nuku'alofa and also at a Hofoa evacuation station, where the Talitha Project is actively supporting their recovery from trauma.
