Tonga has signed an agreement on air transport services with the United Arab Emirates on October 19, at the General Civil Aviation Authority headquarters in Dubai. This is aimed at strengthening bilateral air relations between the two countries.

Tonga's sole domestic inter-islands airline, the Chathams Pacific will discontinue its scheduled air services in Tonga on Saturday 3 March 2013, after less than five years operation, due to a loss of business confidence, after the Tonga government moved to procure aircraft from China.

Tonga will tender its domestic air service for other operators if the monopoly air service of Peau Vava'u does not improve within 30 days, the Prime Minister told parliament on September 27, responding to criticism over the failure of Tonga's one airline policy.

Air Pacific this week will cut back its service to Tonga to twice instead of three times a week, terminating its Saturday service, and flying to Tonga only on Tuesday and Thursday, following a clash with Tonga's civil aviation authorities.
