Ten days after Tropic Cyclone Gita struck Tongatapu and ‘Eua with a Category 4 cyclone on the night of 12 February, life is slowly getting back to normal on the islands. The National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) under the directorship of Leveni ‘Aho with the assistance of civil societies, civil servants and volunteers, is coping with the initial recovery stage from Gita.

Australia will donate up to $500k to combat the Zika virus as part of an aid package to Pacific island countries to stop it from spreading and the initial focus of fighting the virus would be in Tonga, after it was confirmed five people contracted the virus and 259 suspected last week in Tonga.

Ten days of medical and civic assistance to Tonga that concludes on Friday, June 21, under the Pacific Partnership 2013 organized by the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy, has involved personnel from over ten countries working together under the humanitarian assistance programme. A reception attended by HM King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u last night, June 19, was hosted by the Japanese Ambassador to Tonga HE Dr Kazuchika Hamuro who said he was appreciative of the United States efforts to lead and continue the multilateral exercise initiative. It is with some interest that I read Prime Minister Key's announcement of aid contributions for Tonga. The most interesting aspect is that, in fact, the amount of NZ annual aid to Tonga comes very close to the total tax revenue that the NZ government would have collected in income tax from income derived in NZ on the NZ$70 million of exports to Tonga in 2007. - Peter Goldstern
