Summing up the Pacific Leaders meeting earlier this month in Rarotonga, Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku said the meeting reassured the Pacific leaders commitment to its 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific continent, and also allowed leaders to be in one mind, especially for the upcoming COP28.

Pacific leaders attended the second U.S.-PIF Summit in Washington this week on the invitation of President Joe Biden, who pledged to work with Congress to provide $200 million in funding for the region. Tonga's Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that the United States is also dedicated to working together with the Pacific region to support the successful delivery and implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent (2050 Strategy).

Tonga is providing further input over a five-day workshop to help develop the regional 2050 strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, which aims to ensure Pacific people will lead free, healthy and productive lives. A session on Oceans and Natural Environment was held today 25 May, with representatives from other Pacific countries joining in virtually.

Several hundred Tongan nationals who are stranded in distant countries, include a small cluster of surgical patients and their carers, who became stuck in India when Tonga's border closed on March 23. The Ministry of Health wants them to be repatriated but CEO Dr Siale 'Akau'ola voiced his extreme frustration today that he can find no viable pathway home for these patients, without stronger collaboration in the region.
