The Legislative Assembly of Tonga passed the National Annual Budget amounting to $899.2 million pa’anga for the financial year 2024-2025, last night, 26 June. The Appropriation Act with amendments for the 2024/25 Financial Year was passed with a vote of 21-0, following its third reading in the Assembly.

The Budget debate in parliament, is continuing as the House is pushing to meet the 30 June deadline for the passing of the Government estimates for 2024-25. By today, the Whole House Committee had passed the draft estimates of seven government ministries, including the Vote for the Legislative Assembly's Office, during an extensive debate spanning over a week on the budget statement.

The Minister for Finance, Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing support to the education and health sectors during his budget speech at the Legislative Assembly on June 12. A total of $113.4 million is allocated to Education to support the implementation of activities under the Government priority agenda 4: 'Improving education for all’. A total of $78.9 million is allocated to Health, to support the implementation of activities under the Government priority agenda 5: 'Improving access to quality and affordable healthcare’.
