Move over Taekwondo, Pita Taufatofua is transitioning to another ‘cooler’ sport, cross-country skiing. Famously known as Tonga’s bare chested flag bearer at the Rio Olympics, the taekwondo athlete is taking up skiing in a bid to represent Tonga at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Kasete Naufahu Skeen’s dream of becoming the first Tongan alpine skier in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang is now his goal, after he recently quit his full time job to focus solely on skiing. He has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover his training and estimates his Olympic campaign will cost at least £50,000.

Four skiers will now have the chance to represent Tonga at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, after the Kingdom was admitted as a member of the International Ski Federation (FIS) in June.
