PM meets Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister in Nuku'alofa

The Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Zimbabwe reaffirmed a longstanding diplomatic relations with a meeting between Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua and Zimbabwe's Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, on Friday, 27 February 2026, in Nuku'alofa.

Diplomatic relations between Tonga and Zimbabwe were formally established in February 1999 through shared membership in the United Nations.

The Prime Minister's Office stated that the discussions during the courtesy call focused on areas of mutual interest such as climate change action, South-South cooperation, and regional matters.

"Minister Murwira conveyed Zimbabwe’s interest in strengthening engagement with Pacific Island states and outlined his Government’s candidacy for election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council representing the African regional group," the PMO noted.

Zimbabwe is currently seeking the support of United Nations Member States as part of its campaign to secure election to the Security Council, emphasizing its commitment to international peace and security, multilateral cooperation, climate change, and constructive engagement within the United Nations framework.

The Prime Minister welcomed the visit as an opportunity to further strengthen dialogue between Tonga and Zimbabwe and reaffirmed Tonga’s continued commitment to constructive multilateralism and cooperation among small island developing states (SIDS) and developing nations across regions.
