The Role
The Disability Coordinator will support the work of the Australian Government, through TASP and other Australian-funded initiatives, by implementing activities under the TASP GEDSI Action Plan and new initiatives to meet development objectives in Tonga. The role will assist the TASP GEDSI Adviser to mainstream disability inclusion and implement targeted activities that ensure the safe and equitable participation of people with disabilities in all TASP-supported activities. It will also align with Australia’s Disability Equity and Rights Policy to promote inclusive and sustainable outcomes for people with disabilities.
The Disability Coordinator will –
- Support the development and implementation of a range of targeted disability inclusion activities outlined in the TASP GEDSI Annual workplan/s.
- Ensure that disability inclusion activities align with Australia’s Disability Equity and Rights Policy, promoting best practices and inclusive development principles.
- Provide support to TASP stakeholders to ensure disability inclusion is meaningfully mainstreamed into their activities and business process (including M&E, budgets, information management, inductions, communications, recruitment etc.), and targeted activities are implemented.
- Provide support to OPDs to enable their implementation of Australian-funded activities, and to strengthen business processes as required.
- Encourage engagement between OPD service providers and other Civil Society Organisaitons
- Support the GEDSI Adviser to provide advice and training to TASP teams, DFAT and other key stakeholders on approaches for GEDSI Mainstreaming.
- Ensure reasonable accommodation requirements for OPD representatives and activity participants with disabilities are identified and met, to enable equitable participation by people with disabilities in TASP-supported activities.
- Coordinate disability inclusion activities of OPDs and TASP to help raise awareness on important disability inclusion topics, including supporting OPDs to lead events such as International Day of People with Disabilities, World Braille Day etc.
- Assist with the production and timely submission of GEDSI team deliverables, including reports that are relevant to disability inclusion.
- Support the GEDSI Adviser to respond to disability-related tasking notes provided by DFAT.
- Monitor, track, and record engagements with OPDs and disability service providers to facilitate planning, ensure an accurate understanding of the relationship, inform reporting and update relevant TASP staff on activities.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including OPDs, CSOs, disability service providers and community groups and agencies by engaging in a range of communication channels including formal and informal meetings, presentations, conferences, and on-site visits.
- Act as a point of contact to TASP for stakeholders regarding disability inclusion, liaising with them to advise and respond to requests, and facilitate an integrated approach to stakeholder support.
- Support learning and knowledge exchange activities (e.g., induction, training, workshops, information management systems) as required.
- Support capacity building activities of all grant partners.
- Liaise with community groups, OPDs and CSOs to understand their needs, directing them to and enabling them access to appropriate support.
- Support the GEDSI Adviser to deliver key messages to stakeholders, including updates and changes to TASP services and/or processes.
- Provide feedback on how grantees and stakeholders are performing in specific areas.
- Additional tasks as allocated by the TASP GEDSI Adviser.

About You
- Essential Experience, Capacities and Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in special education, disabilities, social work or related field.
- Minimum three years’ experience in disability inclusion and empowerment, including working with persons with disabilities, their families, and relevant programs and policies.
- Sound understanding of disability issues in the Pacific, including human rights frameworks and donor policies such as DFAT’s disability declarations.
- Proven ability to apply disability inclusion principles, deliver empowerment initiatives, and contribute to monitoring and evaluation processes.
- Strong communication skills in English and Tongan, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and independently when required.
- Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and engage empathetically across all levels.

- Lived experience of disability issues in Tonga or the wider Pacific region
