Gov’t lifts ban on older vehicles import

The Cabinet has approved a one-year lifting of the ban on importing vehicles that are 10 years or older. The Minister for Customs and Inland Revenue Hon. Mateni Tapueluelu, said today, 21 February, at a media briefing with the PM Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke and members of Cabinet.

Mateni said an official announcement would be made next week. He said that this decision is based on Cabinet review programs.

The government's plan is to "educate the public" on this policy.

Minister Tapueluelu acknowledged a lack of understanding among both Tongan residents and those overseas regarding a government policy on banning of older vehicles.

He said this policy needed to be understood to ensure that any future bans are effective and sustainable.

In the meantime, PM Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke urged people to import good and durable vehicles.
