Tongan athletes test themselves at Commonwealth Games

Apart from Weightlifting and Diving, Tonga’s athletes in the Commonwealth Games have been knocked out of their competitions in Glasgow this week.

The Chef de Mission Dr ‘Amanaki Fakakovikaetau said that competition for Team Tonga in athletics, boxing and swimming had came to an end.

He said the weightlifters were still competing, with the only diver Zarka to compete this weekend.

Swimmer, ‘Ifalemi Paea, although out of the competition, did well achieving his personal best finishing 31st out of 68 swimmers in the Men’s 50m Freestyle on 28 July. The day before, Paea finished 18th out of 37 competitors in the Men’s 100m Butterfly.

On the other hand, medal boxer hopeful Uaine Fa Jr who won bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, had a disappointing result bowing out to Nigeria’s Ajagba Efe in the Men’s super heavy weight, on 25 July.

Results

Other results on 28 July, included swimmers Irene Prescott finishing last in the women’s 50m backstroke out of 35 competitors. Tong Li Panuve came third to last of 68 swimmers in the men’s 50m backstroke.

Benjamin Taualii lost to Nathan Thorley of Wales in the men’s light heavy, while Oscar Finau lost to Steven Donnelly of Ireland in the men's welter weight.

Runner Tongia Vakaafi finished second to last of 27 competitors in the men’s marathon.
