Four road incidents were recorded during a weekend traffic operation by Tonga Police, while 45 people were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI).
A 29-year-old man from Navutoka was charged with DUI after colliding with an electrical pole.
A 26-year-old man from Sia’atoutai was charged with reckless driving after swerving and hitting a coconut tree on the side of the road.
A 17-year-old boy from Ngele’ia was charged with reckless driving and driving without a licence.
A 23-year-old man from Fahefa was charged with reckless driving after colliding with an electrical pole.
Tonga Police reported that while the individuals involved sustained injuries, none of the incidents resulted in fatalities.
Police also charged 45 people with DUI, (32 men and 13 women).
Police operations during the weekend continue as traffic offences increased, particularly DUI offences.
Major events including the Miss Galaxy Pageant and the Intercollegiate Rugby Championship were held on Friday.
