House passes 2026-27 deficit Budget in late sitting

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga tonight approved the national annual Budget of $949.4 million pa'anga for FY 2026-2027, passing the Appropriation Bill with amendments.

The budget was passed with 20 votes during a late sitting tonight at the Parliament Chamber in Nuku’alofa, 18 June 2026.

Meanwhile, of the $949.4 million budget, $735.2 million is cash and $214.2 million is in-kind assistance.

Presented by the Acting Minister for Finance and Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua, the budget is the first fiscal plan of the current government and is guided by the theme: “Accelerate delivery of vital Government initiatives to generate sustainable, inclusive growth.”

The passage of the budget authorizes government expenditure for the upcoming financial year and enables ministries and public agencies to implement planned programmes and projects beginning 1 July 2026.

Following the conclusion of budget proceedings, the Legislative Assembly adjourned and will resume its sitting on Monday, 22 June 2026.
