Members of the Tonga Cycling Federation celebrated World Cycling Day with a 48-kilometre group ride across Tongatapu, promoting healthy living, road safety and environmental awareness while continuing efforts to grow the sport in the country, today.
The federation, established last year, organised the ride to encourage the benefits of cycling for people of all ages. Participants gathered at the Post Office in Nuku'alofa before setting off along the eastern Liku Road route to Fua'amotu and returning to the finish line at the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel.

A diverse group of cyclists, included beginners, experienced riders, local Tongans and foreign friends, with participants ranging from young people to older adults.
The federation received official recognition from the World governing body for cycling, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), in September, providing a platform for the sport's development in Tonga.
Officials said one of their key goals is to encourage greater participation in cycling while promoting road safety throughout the country.
Police officers accompanied the riders throughout the event, leading the group along the route and helping to ensure the safety of participants and other road users.
The federation is also using cycling as a way to encourage healthier lifestyles, reduce reliance on motor vehicles and fuel consumption, and support environmental sustainability.
Attention is now turning to the 2027 Pacific Games, with the federation calling for interested cyclists to become involved in the sport as it begins preparations to identify and develop athletes capable of representing Tonga at the regional event.
Officials hope events such as the World Cycling Day ride will inspire more people to take up cycling and strengthen the sport's presence across Tonga.
