60 cases of dengue confirmed to date

A total of 60 cases Dengue fever have been confirmed across Tonga, an increase of two cases since the last report, the Ministry of Health confirmed today, 12 May 2026 in their Situation Report no. 19.

No cases are currently hospitalized for Dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2).

The majority of cases are found in the age group of 11-14 years, predominantly male and with the highest number of cases in Tongatapu.

There are no dengue related deaths reported to date in this outbreak.

Response activities to reduce the spread of the disease in the community include, health-talks held at GMS Ha’ateiho, Pea, Tokomololo, Puke, Popua, Fasi, Kolomotu’a, Nuku’alofa and churches Free Church of Tonga and Constitutional Church of Tonga. A community clean-up campaign was also done in Havelu.

“Ongoing vector controls including household insecticide spraying completed in Havelu, Tonga College, Beulah College and Anastasis College.

“Response teams, continue to distribute mosquito repellents and bed nets to households with confirmed dengue cases,” stated the Ministry of Health.

Public recommendations:

  • Eliminate mosquito breeding sites around homes, schools, and workplaces.
  • Use mosquito protection such as bed nets, repellents, and wearing long-sleeved clothing, especially during peak biting times.
  • Seek medical care early if you develop dengue fever symptoms and follow health advices from the Ministry of Health.
  • Support community clean-up activities.

Dengue fever symptoms:

  • Fever for at least 2 days (≥38◦C)
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Swollen glands
  • Rash that appears 3-4 days after fever begins

Severe symptoms that require immediate medical attention:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bleeding tendency
  • Persistent vomiting
