Fifteen new dengue fever cases were reported with positive rapid tests, which brings the total cumulative cases to 756 in Tonga today, 19 May.
According to the latest Situation Report from the Ministry of Health, Tongatapu has 381 cases, Vava’u 309, ‘Eua 62 and Ha’apai four.
Six patients are currently hospitalised but in stable condition;, three in Viola Hospital, one in Niu’eiki and two in Princess Fuspiala.
Three dengue-related deaths have been reported to date.
Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) is the responsible virus for this current outbreak in Tonga.
Recommendations for the Public
The Ministry of Health urges people to continue to clean up and destroy mosquito breeding sites around the home and schools.
“Wear appropriate clothing to minimise mosquito bites and use mosquito nets and repellents. If you’re sick, watch out for severe symptoms and seek medical attention immediately.”
Response Activities
There is ongoing case investigation and vector control to hot spot and high risk areas, carried out by the Ministry, supported by communities, government ministries, NGOs, and stakeholders, as well as continuous technical support from WHO and UNICEF.
