A 24-year-old man from Fatai has been charged with reckless driving, after the van he was driving crashed on Sunday evening at Hihifo Road. Tonga Police said the accident occurred when the driver of the van attempted to overtake another vehicle.
Deputy Police Commissioner Tevita Vailea, said the 24-year-old was driving a Toyota van westbound on Hihifo Road near Puke around 5:40 pm on Sunday.
It is alleged that while trying to pass another vehicle, the driver lost control, causing the van to swerve northeast, hit the fence of a petrol station, and crash into a power pole. There were no passengers in the vehicle.
DPC Vailea told Matangi Tonga that the driver sustained minor injuries to his hands and body.
Police allege that the incident was caused by speeding, reckless driving, and an improper attempt to overtake. Alcohol was not a factor.
The driver holds a valid licence.
