Joe Mataele, a Leading Marine Technician (LMT) who grew up in Kolomotu'a Tongatapu, was named the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) 2024 Sailor of the Year.

He is a son of the late Joe Tu'ilatai Mataele and Aiona Saluni Mataele, and has family ties to Fo'ui and Kolomotu'a, Tongatapu; Leimatu'a, Vava'u; and Koulo, Ha'apai.

LMT Mataele told Matangi Tonga that the Sailor of the Year recognizes certain individuals work and contribution to the RNZN/NZDF over the year, and his fellow nominees are worthy of this recognition.

"However, I truly believe I received this award not based on my own accord but because of the guidance and support of those at my current posting, Leadership Development Group/ Initial Training Squadron, previous postings with the Marine Technical Branch, but most importantly God, family and friends. This recognition-award is received on behalf of them," he said.

The New Zealand Navy stated that LMT Mataele joined the RNZN in July 2015. He "is a highly respected engineer known for his motivation, problem-solving abilities, and a steadfast commitment to safety and continuous professional growth."

He is also a Basic Common Training instructor for RNZN newest aspiring sailors.

"LMT Mataele is an inspiring leader who lays a strong foundation in discipline, accountability, and teamwork, ensuring our recruits are prepared to meet the demands of naval service with confidence and resilience."

"His guidance goes beyond technical skills, fostering a warrior mind-set and deep understanding of our core values. His professionalism, resilience, and unwavering dedication sets a very high benchmark for others to follow," RNZN added.
