Toddler drowns in flooded pit at Popua

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

A  boy aged 20 months, was suspected to have drowned, after falling into a pit filled with rain water at private residence in Popua, yesterday, Sunday, 13 October 2024.

The incident was reported to Tonga Police, who responded  at around 1:45 pm.

“The preliminary investigations indicated that the incident involved a little boy, aged 1 year and 8 months old, who was playing with his siblings near an unfinished ground hole filled with rainwater.”

The child went missing and they began searching for him.

In an update on 15 October, Tonga Police reported that it was a brother who discovered the boy, floating in the pit behind their home.

“Efforts were made to pull him out and call for help, but it was too late.”

An ambulance arrived at the scene at around 2:15 pm when the medical personnel confirmed the boy’s death.

The police are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
