Road death at Pelehake

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

One person died and four others sustained serious injuries in a car crash on Tuku’aho Road, at Pelehake, Tongatapu, on Saturday 12 October.

Tonga Police responded to the fatal crash at around 1:17 pm on Saturday. Upon arrival at the scene of the crash, police officers observed bystanders assisting in removing the injured from the vehicle. One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and three other passengers sustained serious injuries, and were transported to Vaiola Hospital.

“The incident involved a white Toyota Hilux, which was an Aviation Fire Department vehicle carrying five passengers, including the driver,” Police reported.

After the initial investigations, Tonga Police determined that the vehicle was travelling westbound at high speed when the driver lost control and swerved off the road and collided with a coconut tree.

Police allege that alcohol was a significant factor that contributed to the driver’s loss of control.

The driver (26) from Fatumu is currently in Police custody.
