On February 17 the World Bank and the Government of Tonga signed a US$27 million grant to make air travel safer and more efficient for people travelling to and from Tonga. The investment is part of the World Bank's regional Pacific Aviation Investment Program, and will support rehabilitation of Fua'amotu International Airport and Vava'u Airport to ensure both meet minimum international safety and security standards.

Today the World Bank Director for the Pacific Region, Nigel Roberts, and the Asian Development Bank's Regional Director of the Sydney Office, Eugenue Zhukov, jointly opened the new premises of the World Bank Group, which will also host the ADB development coordinator. These premises symbolize the deepening working relationship by both banks with the Solomon Islands Government and with each other.

Following the publication last Thursday of a report by the World Bank's Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) that is heavily critical of the World Bank's own publication "Doing Business," the ITUC has urged the Bank to definitively remove the topic of labour standards from the mandate of "Doing Business," the Bank's headline annual publication. (Editior's Note: Tonga won the latest World Bank Reformer of Year Award 2007. The selection was based on a survey conducted by the World Bank and published in its "Doing Business" report of 178 economies and ranking them for the quality of the services that they offer.)

Tonga has scored high ratings in surveys conducted by the World Bank for measuring the ease of doing business. It came in 6th place in a review of 32 small island developing states. Fiji was 4th and Samoa 10th.
