Federal Pacific Insurance and Finance in Tonga co-hosted a cocktail function with the National Reserve Bank of Tonga on November 16, attended by the delegates of the 32nd South Pacific Governors Meeting. The Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga, Dr Sione Ngongo Kioa in thanking Federal Pacific for their hospitality for co-hosting the cocktail function, commented: “this is proof that partnerships between the public and private sectors are possible."

Tonga at COP23 last week in Bonn, Germany, called for the establishment of Climate Change as a core security issue and stressed the need for Small Island Developing States such as Tonga, to build resilience, warning that inaction "will ultimately result in our disappearance as a people and a culture".

Describing economic globalization as a double-edged sword that should be viewed comprehensively, China's President Xi Jinping said in Davos in January that we should pay attention to its deficiency but "not give up eating for fear of choking" or simply attribute the problems like the financial crisis and refugees to globalization, let alone protectionism. China views globalization's general trend as right. In May this year, China will host the “Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation” in Beijing to discuss ways to boost cooperation, build cooperation platforms and share cooperation outcomes. A $35 million pa’anga Youth Employment Project financed by the World Bank to be handled by the Government of Tonga starting in July 2017, will see funds disbursed over four-years to address youth unemployment in Tonga where the problems of idle youth are enormous and related to youth related anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

The Tonga Government has today reaffirmed its confidence in the investment agreement made recently with the Ngati Tahu Ngati Whaoa Trust from New Zealand. The government stated that a recent judgment made by the New Zealand High Court against the current Chairman of the Trust "was a private matter which does not...affect the Agreement that exists between the Trust and the Tongan Government."
