New Zealand will release about NZ$10.5 million in New Zealand aid grant to Tonga that has been withheld since 2013, the New Zealand Foreign Minister, Hon. Murray McCully announced in Nuku'alofa yesterday, 16 February, after the government had grounded its controversial MA60 aircraft.

Visiting Tonga, New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key this morning pledged around $2 million assistance to upgrade Tonga’s Teufaiva Stadium for the 2019 Pacific Games. New Zealand has also committed another $5 million towards the reconstruction of schools in Ha’apai that were destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Ian.

Tonga is seeking an estimated $56 million for reconstructing homes in Ha‘apai after Cyclone Ian, Tonga’s Deputy Prime Minister Samiu Vaipulu said on Friday at a press conference, held jointly with the visiting New Zealand Foreign Minister. Hon. Murray McCully said there was an enormous challenge ahead for Tonga’s government and the figures given by the Deputy Prime Minister were “frightening”.

Tonga has banned the sales and use of two Karicare Infant Formula products for newborns and for six-months babies and older after receiving information that the products may contain contaminated ingredients. The ban came into effective on Thursday, August 8, and will remain until further notice.
