Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva has apologised to the Chinese community in Tonga and especially to individuals who have been victims of violent crimes, the Chinese Embassy said in a statement today. The Ambassador said that Chinese in Tonga still faced many difficulties and challenges. Crimes against the Chinese community happened frequently in 2016 and some brutal cases remained unsolved.

Methamphetamine, criminal deportees and outlaw motorcycle gangs are the three main threats in policing the Pacific Region according to a 2016 Transnational Organised Crime Assessment. While some 35 criminal deportees are returned to Tonga every year, Tonga Police revealed today that it is the gravity of their reoffending that concerns law enforcement because some criminal deportees have killed again.

Nara Masista Rakhmatia during a speech at the 1st Session of the General Assembly of the UN in New York on 24 September 2016 also accused PM Pohiva and other Pacific leaders of using the General Assembly to advance their domestic agendas and to divert attention from political and social problems at home.

A Chinese company Zhuhai Singyes that is investing more than $10 million pa’anga to build a 2 Mega Watts solar farm in Tonga will sell its energy to Tonga Power Ltd. at a negotiated price, the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Huang Huaguang said at a reception at the Kahana Resort on Wednesday 28 September. It is one of two large undertakings by Chinese companies investing in Tonga.
