RE-ADVERTISEMENT

INVITATION TO LODGE EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR APPOINTMENT AS LORD CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE KINGDOM OF TONGA

Deadline: 1200 Hours (Tongan Time) on Friday 31 st May 2024

The Judicial Appointments and Discipline Panel (“the Panel”) calls for expressions of interest from King's Counsel seeking appointment to the current vacancy for Lord Chief Justice of the Kingdom of Tonga.

To be eligible for appointment, the minimum requirements are as specified in Clause 86 of the Constitution of Tonga, namely that Counsel must: -

  • Hold or have held high judicial office; or
  • Have been qualified to practice as an advocate in a Court in the (British) Commonwealth (which includes the Kingdom of Tonga) having unlimited jurisdiction in civil or criminal matters for not less than ten years.

The preferred applicant should have held high judicial office (full-time or part-time) and have substantial experience of Civil, Commercial Law and Criminal Law as also of Judicial Review.

Anyone lodging an expression of interest is asked to provide full personal particulars; a detailed curriculum vitae; and any further material relevant to the appointment. At least two written professional references and two written character references should also be provided together with contact details of those persons. Terms and conditions of service will be provided to applicants who are shortlisted.

Expressions of interest should be sent by e-mail to the Judicial Panel at JADP [dot] TONGA [at] GMAIL [dot] COM to be received no later than 1200 Hours (Tongan Time) on Friday 31st May 2024. All expressions of interest will be treated in the strictest confidence. Applicants who are short-listed by the Panel will be invited to Interview.

The Panel will then make a recommendation for consideration by H.M. the King in Privy Council: the appointment is made by the King.
